Telangana Professional Tax

A professional tax is a direct tax levied by the state governments on the income of individuals including professionals, self-employed non-professionals, salaried, traders etc. It is deducted from the total taxable income. The state government has complete authority, including making laws, determining slab for professional taxes & collecting professional taxes from the individuals. The tax slab limit for the professional tax varies for each state with a cap at ₹ 2,500 per individual in a financial year. Not all states in India levy these taxes on the income, however Telangana is one such state that imposes the professional tax on the income of the individuals, the tax slab rate for which is provided in the subsequent paragraphs below.

How to Register for Professional Tax in Telangana?

  • Basically, there are two categories of individuals, employers & self-employed. Employers are required to obtain a certificate of registration and pay professional tax on behalf of their employees. Similarly, self-employed will have to obtain a Certificate
  • Visit the official Commercial website of Telegana at https://www.tgct.gov.in/tgportal/.
  • Click on e-registration, then on PT registration.
  • Next, click on New User Sign-Up Here.
  • Enter Email ID, captcha code & click on the submit button.
  • Now, enter other required details, including details about your organisation and click on the submit button.
  • Next, verify all the details & click on Next.
  • Finally, enter the required bank details & click on the Finish icon.

Who Gets Exemption From Professional Tax in Telangana

Individuals are exempted from paying the professional tax in Telangana if they meet any of the following criteria.

  • Any individual above 65 years of age
  • Guardians/ Parents of children with any mental disability
  • Women agents exclusively under the Director of Small Savings or Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana
  • Individuals with a permanent physical disability, including blindness
  • Badli workers of the Textile industry
  • Military personnel of the forces under the Air Force Act 1950, the Navy Act 1957 and the Army Act 1950.

Employers & Self-employed individuals can pay professional taxes by following the steps as mentioned below.

  • Visit the official Commercial website of Telegana at https://www.tgct.gov.in/tgportal/.
  • Click on "e-Payment" and then 'Select the Tax Type' in the dropdown menu.
  • Fill in required details and click on the submit button.
  • Verify all the details & click on 'Make Payment'.
  • Select the required Bank from the dropdown menu and pay the tax through Net Banking or any other modes.

    CBDT reported that the faceless tax assessment solved more than 60% of IT cases.
