Pay Matrix

Pay matrix is a record chart of the salary range to be used while implementing changes in the salary structure of central government employees. The pay matrix consists of columns divided on the basis of pay levels and rows showing increments in salary over the years up to 40 years in professional life.

The Pay Commission set up by the Indian Government uses the pay matrix during their meetings about reviewing and changing the pay structure. Till date, seven pay commissions have been set up by the Indian government since India’s independence. In each session, stakeholders present their demands regarding changes in pay structure to the Pay Commission, who considers the demands and incorporates changes after discussion, accordingly.

Different pay levels are segregated and presented in the form of a comprehensible pay matrix, making it easier to get an idea of the current pay levels in India. A pay matrix also helps employees to check their current pay level and foresee their potential growth over the course of their professional career. The 7th pay commission pay matrix is the latest matrix that is being followed currently to decide the pay level of any Central Government employee.

7th Pay Matrix Table

The 7th Pay Matrix Table is a rationalised chart presenting salary structure according to different pay levels and is designed by the Seventh Pay Commission of India in 2016. The Seventh Pay Commission met in July 2016, where stakeholders placed their demands, including more transparency in salary structure, equal pay for entry-level employees, etc. The commission discussed bringing these changes and incorporated those in the 7th Pay Matrix.

The changes brought by the 7th Pay Commission resulted in a 23.35% hike in the basic pay and allowances given to government employees. A new matrix has been introduced, known as the 7th Pay Matrix whereby the level of an employee will be determined by the level in the new Pay Matrix, instead of their Grade Pay. The 7th Pay Commission pay matrix presents detailed information about current salary levels in India in the form of a simple chart.
