PRAN: Full Form and Meaning

PRAN full form is Permanent Retirement Account Number. It is a unique 12 digit number allotted to individuals who are registered under the National Pension Scheme or the NPS and the Central Government employees who joined the Government services after the year 2004, as they automatically get registered under the NPS. This number is useful as it helps NPS subscribers distinguish themselves from others and keep track of their NPS savings and investments and update vital information. The PRAN number is allotted to the NPS Subscribers for a lifetime. Pran no is granted by the National Securities Depository Limited. You can apply for a PRAN number through both the online and the offline method, depending upon your convenience, by submitting the required documents.

How do I Apply for a PRAN Number using the Online Method?

The online application process for applying for a PRAN number is easy, convenient, hassle-free and time-saving. This can be done at the NSDL website through either Aadhaar or PAN details. Through the online process, you can conveniently get to e-pran card download without making a physical visit to any Pop. The steps for the online PRAN card application are listed as follows:

PRAN Number Application using PAN

You can get your PRAN number using PAN by following these steps:

  • Visit the official eNPS portal on the NSDL website or go to link: https://enps.nsdl.com/eNPS/NationalPensionSystem.html.
  • On the home page, go-to option, National Pension System on the right side of the screen.
  • As you click on ‘National Pension System’, a dialogue box appears, select option, ‘Registration’.
  • Under the option, ‘Register with’, choose ‘Permanent Account Number (PAN)’ and enter all required details such as Applicant type, the applicant’s status, account type, PAN number, and bank details.
  • After entering the details, click on ‘Continue’.
Key points to note:
  • It is mandatory to have a bank account with an authorised Bank. The selected Bank does KYC procedure for NPS registration.
  • Identification details such as name and address should be similar to bank documents.
  • Enter details accurately during the online procedure
  • Keep a scanned copy of signature and photograph handy in jpeg/jpg format size between 4Kb-12Kb.

PRAN Number Application using Aadhar

You can get your PRAN number using Aadhar by following these steps:

  • Visit the official eNPS portal on the NSDL website or go to link: https://enps.nsdl.com/eNPS/NationalPensionSystem.html.
  • On the home page of this link, go to the option, National Pension System on the screen’s right-hand side.
  • As you click on the ‘National Pension System’ button, a dialogue box appears, select option, ‘Registration’.
  • Under the option, ‘Register with’, choose ‘Aadhaar offline e-KYC’ and enter all required details such as Applicant type, the applicant’s status, account type, aadhar registered mobile number, last digit of aadhar number, and aadhaar generated code.
  • After entering the details, click on ‘Continue’.
Key points to note:
  • In case of PRAN application, KYC done using Aadhar is done via Aadhaar OTP.
  • Ensure that you have the aadhar linked mobile number active.
  • NPS registration process using aadhar uses your biometric details and demographic details from aadhar records.
  • However, you may upload different scanned photographs if you do not wish to use the same photo as in aadhar.
  • Ensure that all online details are filled in accurately.
  • Keep a scanned copy of your signature handy to register successfully. The image should be in jpeg or jpg format ranging between size 4Kb to 12Kb.
  • On successful registration, ensure that you note down the 17 digit acknowledgement number. This number can later be used for PRAN status updates.

How do I Apply for a PRAN Number using the Offline Method?

Apart from the offline method, you can also apply for a PRAN number offline. For this, you are required to visit the nearest PoP or point of sale that is registered under the National Pension System. In general, and in most cases, the allotted PoP is the Bank, where the applicant holds a bank account. At the PoP, ask for an NPS registration form and fill the form accurately with all required details. However, ensure that you carry all KYC documents in originals and photocopies, for confirmation purpose and for attaching with form, respectively. Also, do not forget to collect the Pran number acknowledgement slip that provides the Ack. Number to be later used for checking Pran card status.

Documents Required for Applying PRAN No

Submitting documents is an important factor to be considered while applying for a PRAN no. List of documents required for getting a PRAN number is:

  • PRAN card application form
  • Aadhar card
  • PAN card
  • Passport size photographs scanned copied if online mode.
  • Either copy of bank passbook and scanned copies if online mode OR cancelled cheque.
  • Scanned copy of the signature, if online mode.

The scanned copies of all documents must be in jpeg or jpg format sized between 4 Kb to 12 Kb. Further, ensure that documents are clearly scanned and visible.

How can I Update my Pran Details Online?

At times one might need to get some changes done in the PRAN card due to change in information such as an address, telephone numbers, Pincode, or wrong information mentioned on the PRAN card. In such cases, you can quickly get your PRAN card updated by getting the information changed. This can be done by following the below-mentioned steps:

  • Visit the official NPS portal on the NSDL website or go to the link, https://www.npscra.nsdl.co.in/.
  • On the home page of this portal, look out for the option, ‘PRAN Application Status (Through Ack. No)
  • As you click on this button, you will be redirected to a new page.
  • Here, select option, ‘Subscriber Photo-SIgnature Update Request Status’ and enter details, PRN or Ack No. and captcha code and click on Search.
  • In case you have forgotten the PRAN number, you can use Ack. no to update details on your PRAN card.

How to Check PRAN Status

Checking the PRAN status is easy via the online method. In general, the PRAN card is dispatched to the applicant’s mentioned address by up to 20 days from the date of filling the PRAN card application form. However, if the PRAN card is not dispatched, you can track PRAN number status online by following these steps.

  • Visit the official NPS portal on the NSDL website or go to the link, https://www.npscra.nsdl.co.in/.
  • On the home page of this portal, look out for the option, ‘PRAN Application Status (Through Ack. No)’
  • As you click on this button, you will be redirected to a new page.
  • Here, select option, ‘Subscriber Registration Request Status’ and enter details, Ack No. and captcha code and click on Search.

PRAN Card Download

You can download your PRAN card online on the Central Record Keeping Agency Portal on the NSDL website, on the link https://npslite-nsdl.com/CRAlite/EPranAPYOnloadAction.do by following the below-mentioned steps:

  • On the page that appears on the screen, select amongst options, ‘Click to Search with PRAN’ or ‘Click to Search without PRAN’.
  • If you choose the option, ‘Click to Search with PRAN’, enter the PRAN number and Bank A/C Number. Enter the captcha code and click on ‘Refresh’.
  • If you choose the option, ‘Click to Search without PRAN’, enter the required details such as Subscriber Name, Bank A/C number and Date of Birth.
  • Also, from the drop-down menu under Views for Subscriber, select option, ‘APY ePRAN and Master details view’.
  • To print and download the PRAN card, go to the File menu and choose to save and print.
