PAN Card Update/Correction

The 10-digit PAN is of great importance as it is the account number of a person in the Income Tax Department. The Indian Income Tax Department allocates each individual a unique PAN number. The PAN card must contain all valid and correct details. Hence, it is advisable to make necessary changes in the PAN card if by mistakes it has any wrong information. The process of PAN card correction does not require much time or effort and can be completed both online or offline.

How to Apply PAN Card Update/Correction Online?

Here goes the PAN card correction online process.

  • Get to the TIN portal of NSDL,
  • Go to the ‘Services’ tab on the menu and tap on ‘PAN’ on the drop-down menu.
  • Once on the new screen, scroll up and locate ‘Change/Correction in PAN Data’
  • Tap on the ‘Apply’ link under the said section and it will redirect you to the page of ‘Online PAN application’.
  • On the new page, start by selecting ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card’ from the ‘Application Type’ drop-down menu.
  • Select the ‘Category’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Fill in the ‘Applicant Information’ section with these details.
    • Title
    • Last Name /Surname
    • First Name
    • Middle Name
    • Date of Birth / Incorporation / Formation
    • Email ID
    • Mobile Number
    • Citizenship (Indian or not)
    • PAN number
  • Type in ‘Captcha Code’ and tap on ‘Submit’.
  • Once the request has been registered, you will be provided with a Token Number on the given Email ID.
  • Tap on ‘Continue with PAN Application Form’ and get redirected to the PAN card correction form.
  • On the form, select ‘through e-Sign on NSDL e-gov’ from the given three options for submitting the documents.
  • Once the said option has been selected, the page will require the following personal details.
  • Tap on ‘Next’ and proceed to the page of ‘Contact and other details’
  • On the new page, you can update the current address of your PAN.
  • Proceed to the next page of ‘Document details’.
  • Select the required proof documents from the respective menus.
  • Tap on the self-declaration box and tap on ‘Submit’.
  • After submitting the form of PAN card correction, the page of payment will appear.
  • Make the payment using the given payment gateways.
  • Once the payment has been made, you will receive an acknowledgment slip.
  • To complete the PAN card correction online process, take out a print of the acknowledgment slip and post it to the Income Tax PAN Service Unit of NSDL e-gov, together with the required documents.

How to Apply PAN Card Update/Correction Offline?

One can opt for the PAN correction offline process in these four simple steps.

  • Download a PAN card correction form.
  • Submit the duly filled and signed form with the required documents at the nearest NSDL collection center.
  • Once you receive the application acknowledgment slip, send it to the Income Tax PAN Service Unit of NSDL.
  • Send a letter regarding the same application to the jurisdictional Assessment Officer.

The application form for both offline and online procedures contains the same fields and you can submit the application form to the office address of NSDL. Keep in mind that the acknowledgment slip must reach the office of NSDL within 15 days from receiving the acknowledgment slip.

Fees and Charges for Correction or Update of PAN Existing Card

Both online and offline procedures of the PAN card correction requirea certain amount of fee. The fees vary based on the contact address.

  • For contact address within India: ₹ 110 .
  • For contact address outside India: ₹ 1,020 .

Change Name in PAN Card

PAN card name change may be required in case of wrong name or incorrect spelling. One may need to change their names in the PAN card after getting married. For such purpose follow these steps to change your name on the PAN card.

  • Download the PAN card name change application form ( and fill in online.
  • Submit the duly filled application form along with an affixed photograph of the applicant.
  • Make the payment.
  • After the successful submission of the application, you will receive the PAN card within 45 days.

After making the payment, you will be provided with an acknowledgment slip containing 15 numeric figures that can be used to view the application status. The online and offline procedures for PAN card name change is the same, except for the payment options.

  • In case of applying for the name change on PAN card online, make the payment via net banking, credit card or debit card.
  • In case of applying offline, send a demand draft to the address along with the application form.

How to Change Address in PAN Application form?

The address of the cardholder is not displayed on the PAN card. However, the address is required in the form as it is needed to send the hardcopy of the PAN card. You can change the address in the PAN application form by submitting the 49A form offline.

In case of the online filled PAN application forms that have been verified with Aadhaar OTP, one will require to change the address first in the Aadhaar card. After changing the Aadhaar address, fill up the 49A form.

Documents Required for PAN Card

PAN card correction requires a bunch of documents and the requirements vary based on the cardholders. Here is a list of documents.

Indian citizens and members of Hindu Undivided Family
Aadhaar card, Passport, Voter ID card and Driving license are the commonly required documents as identity proof, address proof and date of birth proof. Apart from these, the following documents are required.

  • Identity proof: Arm’s license, ration card, pensioners’ card and Government issued ID card.
  • Address proof: Electric bill, mobile, gas or water bill, property registration or tax assessment documents, domicile certificate issued by Central Government, etc.
  • Date of Birth proof: Mark sheet, Government issued ID card, pensioners’ card, marriage certificate, etc.

Foreign citizens
Passport, PIO card, OCI card and taxpayer identification card can be used as both identity proof and address proof. Other required documents are as follows.

  • Identity proof: Bank account statement, VISA, FRO issued registration certificate, etc.

    The government has extended the deadline for linking the aadhaar to PAN by another three months to June 30, 2021. The earlier deadline was March 31, 2021. This is the ninth time that the deadline has been extended for individuals to link their PAN with Aadhaar.
