As per Section 139A of the Income Tax Act, an individual should hold one PAN card at one time. In case of multiple PAN cards, one can apply for surrender or cancellation of PAN Card through online & offline modes to avoid a penalty of ₹ 10,000 to the IT department.

How to Cancel a PAN Card?

As mentioned above, there are two ways to apply for PAN card cancellation; offline mode & online mode. Individuals can cancel the PAN card online by visiting the PAN Card Correction Form on TIN-NSDL portal at

https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html. However, to apply for PAN Card cancellation through offline mode, one needs to visit the nearest UTI or NSDL TIN facilitation centre.

PAN Card Cancellation Online

You can follow these steps to apply for PAN Card cancellation online -

  • Visit the official site of the TIN-NSDL portal by clicking on https://www.tin-nsdl.com/.
  • Now, click on PAN under the drop-down box of services, search Change/Correction in PAN Data and click on Apply Now.
  • In Online PAN Application Form, select changes and Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card under application type.
  • Fill other details in the form. In the category option, choose Individual. Mention other details such as name, date of birth, email id, mobile number, captcha code and click on the Submit button.
  • On the next page, now click on Continue with PAN Application Form and you will be redirected to the new page.
  • Now, on the top of the page, choose the “Submit scanned images through e-Sign” option to upload your documents.
  • Mention the PAN number you want to retain at the bottom-left of the page and provide other details in the form.
  • On the next page, mention the PAN number that you want to surrender/cancel and then click on the ‘Next‘ button.
  • Choose proof of identity, residence and date of birth that you want to submit and upload the scanned images of your signature, photograph, and other required documents.
  • In case an individual, the acknowledgement slip for the surrender of PAN should be signed by themselves. In other cases, the same should be signed by the authorised signatories.
  • After submitting your details, verify your details and proceed to make the payment via demand draft, credit card, debit card or internet banking.
  • On successful payment, you will see a downloadable acknowledgement, save and print the same for future reference.
  • Also, send the printed copy of the acknowledgement to NSDL e-Gov along with two photographs. The envelope should be labelled with ‘Application for PAN cancellation’ and the acknowledgement number.

PAN Card Cancellation Offline

You can apply for PAN card cancellation offline by using following methods:


  • Visit any NSDL TIN facilitation centre.
  • Now, ask for Form 49A and fill all the required details in the form. This form is filled to make corrections in your PAN Card.
  • Next, after filling the Form submit the same at any NSDL Tin facilitation centre and request for correction in your PAN card details.


  • You can also apply for any corrections in the PAN Card by writing to the Assessing immediate officer of your area.
  • You must mention all the valid details in the letter, as mentioned below:
    Details to be included are:
    • Name of Assessee: Individuals should mention the correct name as provided in any other legal documents.
    • Address: Individuals should always mention a valid residential address.
    • Information about the Cancelled PAN Card: Mention all the details of the extra PAN Card that you want to cancel
    • Information about the PAN card that wants to retain: Along with that provide all the details of the PAN card that you want to retain.
  • Always collect an acknowledgement copy of the letter submitted for PAN Card cancellation. This letter provided by the Income Tax Department of India acts as a proof that extra PAN card possessed by you has been cancelled by the IT department.

Reasons for Cancelling or Surrender PAN Card Number

Individuals may need to cancel or surrender their existing PAN Card Number due to the reasons as mentioned below:

  • Multiple PAN numbers: Many times the IT department issues multiple PAN numbers to an individual taxpayer by mistake. However, as per Section 139 of the Income Tax Act an individual can hold only one PAN card at the same time. Thus, the assessee in such a scenario needs to apply for PAN Card surrender.
  • Errors in the Details: In case the details mentioned in the PAN card contain errors such as wrong name or date of birth, he /she needs to apply for the cancellation of the PAN card and apply for a new one.

How to Check PAN Card Cancellation Status?

Once individuals have filled the form for cancellation of PAN, they can check the status of their request by following the steps as mentioned below:

  • Visit the official Income Tax website by clicking on https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home.
  • Now, under the Quick Links section, click on ‘Know Your PAN/TAN/AO’.
  • Next, enter details such as name, date of birth, gender and mobile number and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • You will not receive an OTP on the mobile number provided. Enter the same and click on ‘Validate’.
  • You can now view the status of your application form. In case you have applied for PAN Card cancellation because of multiple PAN Cards, you would be asked to provide additional information.
