Permanent Account Number or PAN is a unique alpha-numeric account number for a person in the Income Tax Department. The PAN assists in tracking taxable financial transactions of individuals and as well as of organizations. The Income Tax Department of India issues and monitors the Permanent Account Number under the 139 section of Income Tax Act of 1961. It is not a statutory mandate; however, it is required for availing many services from opening a bank account to filing for Income Tax Refund claim. 

Checking PAN card via the Income Tax e filing portal is an effortless job. The PAN verification service provided by the portal can be used to track down fake PANs. One can search the PAN and verify PAN details in a few steps on the e-filling website of the Income Tax Department

Know Your PAN Number by Name and DOB

The e-filling portal of the Income Tax earlier provided an option named ‘Know Your Pan’ that could be used to view the PAN number. All one needed to do was log in to the website and enter the respective name and date of birth. However, the website does not display the option anymore. In order to know your PAN by name and date of birth, you will be required to complete the PAN verification first and then enter your name along with the date of birth.

Following is the process to verify PAN and then tracking it down by entering name and DOB.

  • Land on the IT e-filling portal, https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home.
  • On the left bar of the page, in the ‘Quick Links’ section, tap on ‘Verify Your Pan Details’ and move to the screen of ‘Verify Your Pan’.
  • On the ‘Verify Your PAN” page, enter the following personal details.
    • PAN
    • Full Name
    • Date Of Birth (select from the calendar)
    • Status (select from the drop-down menu)
  • Type in the ‘Captcha Code’ as shown in the image and tap on ‘Submit’.

You will be able to know your PAN number after following the above-mentioned steps. The page will show, ‘Your PAN is Active and the details are matching with the PAN database. However, if the information you provided is incorrect, the page will display this message, “No record found for the given PAN’. The above-mentioned process is now known as know your PAN by name and DOB. The previous procedure and the current procedure require the same information.

Know Your NSDL PAN Card Details from Income Tax Website

PAN number search can be done online on the official website of Income Tax using the steps mentioned below:

  • Get to the Income Tax Website(https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home) and log in.
    • If you are new to the portal, register yourself by clicking on ‘Register Yourself’ on the top right corner of the page.
    • If you are a registered user, tap on ‘Login Here’ located below ‘Register Yourself’.
  • Once logged in, go to ‘Profile Settings’ and click on the option of ‘My Account’.
  • The page will display your PAN card details along with the PAN number.

As mentioned above, you will have to be a registered user for checking PAN card on the website of Income Tax. You can get yourself registered by following these steps.

  • Tab on ‘Register Yourself’.
  • Choose ‘User Type’ to get the Registration Form.
  • Fill up the Registration Form with valid details.
  • Type in the OTP received via mail or SMS and the process will be completed.

How to Track PAN Card Status?

Once you have applied for your PAN card, it can take up to 15 days for generating the PAN card. Meanwhile, you can know your PAN application status by using the 15 digit acknowledgment number you received after making the application.

You can check PAN Card status in the following ways:

  • Through SMS
  • Through Call
  • Through NSDL website

Track PAN Card Status via SMS Facility

To know your PAN number status via SMS facility, follow these two steps.

  • Enter NSDL PAN together with the 15-digit acknowledgement number received while making the PAN application.
  • Send the SMS to 57575 and receive the current status to the same mobile number via SMS.

How to Track PAN Status through Call?

Track your PAN status via call, follow these steps.

  • Dial 020-27218080.
  • Provide the acknowledgement number consisting of 15 digits.

What are the steps to checking PAN card online?

You can track your application status online by visiting their official PAN card website TIN-NSDL (https://www.tin-nsdl.com/guided/guide-pan-introduction.html). Take the option of ‘Status Track’ located in the ‘PAN Application’ section. After this, follow these steps:

  • On the new page click on ‘Track Status of your PAN/TAN Application online’.
  • In the next step select application type as ‘PAN – New/Change Request’ from the drop-down menu in front of ‘Application Type’.
  • Now, enter the ‘Acknowledgement Number’ and follow it up by entering the captcha.
  • Lastly, click on ‘Submit’ to get the status of your PAN application.
