PAN Applicants of Form 49AA

To do any financial transactions related to business purpose or for personal use, all the Indian citizens, including Non-Residents Indians (NRIs) are mandated to hold the PAN card. PAN Card is a 10 digit alphanumeric identification number which is allotted by the Income Tax Department of India to all the taxpaying citizens. NRIs have to fill out a form 49AA to procure the PAN card. The government of India initiated Form 49AA under Rule 114 by the Income Tax Rules 1962. The KYC details of the applicant have to be filled by Foreign Institutional Investor or a Qualified Foreign Investor as determined under the guidelines given by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). However, a Qualified Foreign Investor (QFI) can only apply for a PAN card through Depository Participant only.

Structure of Form 49AA

The Form 49AA of PAN cards is divided into categories and subsections to make the process of filling the form easier. Structure of form 49AA is similar to 49A, an applicant has to fill general details like Name, parent’s name, AO code, Address, source of income etc. In form 49AA, an applicant also has to fill Know Your Customer (KYC) details:-

In case of Individuals:-
  • Marital status
  • Citizenship status
  • Occupation Details
In the case of non-individuals:-
  • Type of company- Private Company, Public Company, Body Corporate, Financial Institution, Non-Government Organization or Charitable Organization.
  • Gross Annual Income in Indian rupees.
  • Net-worth (Assets fewer liabilities) in Indian rupees.
  • Does it have few persons or persons of the same family holding beneficial ownership and control?
  • Is the entity involved/providing any of the following services- Foreign Exchange, Money Changer Services, Gaming/Gambling/Lottery services (Casinos and Betting Syndicates) or Money Lending, Pawning?
  • Whether the applicant or the applicant’s authorized signatories/trustees/office bearers are politically exposed or related to a politically exposed person.
  • Taxpayer Identification Number in the country of residence.

Components of Form 49AA

  • Assessing officer code- An applicant has to fill details related to Assessing Officer code details like the Area code of the accounts office, Accounts office type, Range code and Accounts office number.
  • Full name- An individual has to write their name, including marital status.
  • Abbreviation of the name- Applicant will fill the abbreviation which they want to be displayed on the card.
  • Other name - In case an applicant has another name it has to be filled in this section.
  • Gender- Mention the gender, male/female/other.
  • Date of birth- An applicant will fill the date of birth in this section and in case of an organisation, fill the date of partnership/incorporation/Agreement or Trust deed.
  • Father's name- Mention father’s first name, last name and middle name. Only individual applicants have to fill this field.
  • Address- Fill the details about residential address and office address if the card is for a company.
  • Address of communication- Choose an address which applicant wants to be contacted at.
  • Telephone number and email id- For communication purpose, mention phone number and email with country code and state code.
  • Status of applicant- Mention if an applicant is an individual, a HUF member, Company, Partnership firm, etc.
  • Registration number- Fill the registration number for the company, firms, LLPs etc.
  • Citizenship-The applicant has to mention the country of their citizenship and ISD code of the country of citizenship in this part of the form.
  • A representative of the applicant in India- Applicant has to fill representative details including their address and full name.
  • Documents submitted- Mention the list of documents which the applicant will submit with the form.
  • KYC details- This section contains details like marital status, occupation details, citizenship status and more and it has to be filled by Qualified Foreign Investors.

How to Fill Form 49AA?

You can fill Form 49AA both online and offline.

Offline method to fill Form 49AA
  • An applicant can download the form from NSDL or UTIITSL Portal
  • Things to keep in mind while filling out the form:-
    • The form is filled in English
    • An applicant should fill the form in block letters, each box can contain only one character
    • The form should be filled with a Black ink pen, preferably ballpoint pen
    • On the top left of a photograph attached, an applicant should put their signature or left thumb impression
    • Verify that all the details are correct to avoid rejection
Online method to fill Form 49AA
  • Visit the NSDL or UTIITSL portal
  • To fill the Application form 49AA for a new PAN card click “Apply Now”
  • An application form will appear, fill all the details carefully and click on Submit
  • After that click on Proceed to Payment Button.
  • Make a payment, an applicant can use any method to make the payment credit card/debit card/ wallet payments/ UPI.
  • Download the application form and get a printout
  • Attach the documents, paste a photograph, sign the application form and send all these to the postal address- 'Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016'.
