How to Generate UAN?

UAN or Universal Account Number is a unique 12-digit number allotted to every member of Employee Provident (EPF) for his/her EPF account to access information about their funds in the EPF accounts. Employees can also avail various other services like transferring funds from one PF account to another, view and manage EPF passbook, track claim status etc. While they can get a UAN number directly from their employers and usually it is mentioned in the payslip as well. However, in case of employees want to generate UAN, they need to follow the steps as mentioned below:

  • Visit UAN Member Portal by clicking on https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ and click on the Direct UAN Allotment by Employees link near the bottom right of the page.
  • Next, enter your Aadhaar linked number and wait for a One Time Password (OTP) to be generated and sent to your registered mobile number.
  • As you enter the OTP, your information from the Aadhar database will be fetched and auto-populated in the required fields.
  • You can now obtain your UAN.

How to Know Your UAN?

While employers provide a UAN number to the employees or the same is mentioned on the salary slips. You can know your Universal Account Number on the official UAN portal using your PF number or member ID. Below mentioned are the steps to know your UAN.

  • Visit the official UAN Member Portal by clicking on https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ . Now, on the bottom right-hand side of the page, click on Know your UAN.
  • Next, enter details such as Member ID, Aadhaar/PAN Number, Date of Birth, Mobile Number, Captcha Code and click on 'Get Authorisation Pin'.
  • Enter the OTP received on your mobile number and click on 'Validate OTP and get UAN'.
  • Finally, you will receive UAN on your registered mobile number.

How to activate UAN?

To activate your UAN, you need to follow the steps as mentioned below:

  • Visit the official EPFO website and on the right side of the page click on Activate UAN under the important links.
  • Now, enter your UAN, date of birth, mobile number, captcha code and click on 'Get Authorisation Pin'.
  • Next, verify all the details and tick the checkbox next to I agree.
  • Finally, enter OTP received on your registered mobile number and click on Validate OTP and Activate UAN.

How To Link Aadhaar with UAN and PF?

You can link your Aadhaar with UAN using the following ways as mentioned below:

  • Umang App: To link your Aadhaar with UAN using Umang App follow the steps as mentioned below.
    • Download the Umang App from your google play store and click on EPFO under all services tab.
    • Now, select 'eKYC services' and then on 'Aadhaar Seeding Option'.
    • Next, enter UAN and click on get OTP.
    • After successful verification of OTP, now enter your Aadhaar number.
    • You will be sent another OTP on your mobile number, and as after verification of OTP, your Aadhaar will be linked to UAN.
  • Biometric credentials on e-KYC Portal: To use this method, you must have a registered biometric device for Aadhaar verification. To get details about the same, you can visit the official UIDAI's website.
    • Firstly visit https://iwu.epfindia.gov.in/eKYC/ and click on 'Link UAN Aadhaar' under 'For EPFO members' and enter UAN.
    • You will now receive an OTP on UAN registered mobile number.
    • After OTP Verification, now enter Aadhaar details.
    • Next, choose the Aadhaar verification method (using Biometrics).
    • Biometric will be captured using a registered biometric device, and finally, your UAN will be linked to Aadhaar as details are verified.
  • OTP verification on e-KYC Portal of EPFO to link Aadhar: To link your Aadhaar with UAN and PF, you need to follow the steps as mentioned below:
    • Firstly, log in to the EPFO Portal and click on "For employees".
    • Now, under 'For EPFO members', click on 'Link UAN Aadhaar'.
    • Next, enter details such as UAN and mobile number.
    • You will now receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.
    • Now enter your Aadhaar details and select Aadhaar Verification Method ( Mobile/Email).
    • You will be sent another OTP on your mobile number, and after verification of OTP, your Aadhaar will be linked to UAN.
  • On EPFO portal: To link your Aadhaar with UAN through the unified portal of EPFO follow the steps as mentioned below:
    • Firstly log in to the Unified Portal of EPFO by clicking on https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/ .
    • Now, click on Manage Tab and then choose the 'KYC' option.
    • Next, select Aadhaar by clicking on the checkbox, enter your Aadhaar number, name on your Aadhaar.
    • Finally, click on the Save button. It will now be shown under 'Pending KYC', which will be approved by the employer.

Employers would require the following documents for UAN registration of the employees.

  • Updated Aadhar Card of the applicant.
  • PAN Card
  • Bank account details and IFSC
  • Identity Proof- Driving License, Passport, Voter Id etc
  • Proof of Address
  • ESIC Card
