What is EPF Form 31?

EPF or Employee Provident Fund is a retirement benefits scheme that allows you to build a corpus for retirement. In case of a financial emergency, the funds accumulated in the EPF account can, however, be withdrawn during the employment period as well. To do so, you are required to submit EPF claim form 31 to EPFO with a valid justification/reason for advance withdrawal of funds. EPF withdrawal form 31 can be filled both through online and offline modes. To fill EPF withdrawal form 31 online, your UAN must be registered.

Details required for withdrawal through EPF Form 31

As mentioned above, employees need to fill the details in the EPF Form 31. These details are discussed below. Also, there are some sections & details which are to be filled by the employer & EPFO commissioner.

Submission of physical application through Form 31

Once you have downloaded the EPF Form 31, you can submit the duly filled form at your respective Jurisdictional EPFO office along with the required documents by getting an attestation from the employer.

Submission of online application for withdrawal from EPF

To submit an online application for withdrawal of funds from EPF, your UAN must be activated and linked to a registered mobile number, Aadhaar & PAN Card. Employees can submit EPF claim Form 31 online by following the steps as mentioned below:

  • Visit the official EPFO portal by clicking on https://unifiedportal-emp.epfindia.gov.in/epfo/.
  • Now, log in to the portal by entering your UAN, Password & captcha code.
  • Next, under the ‘Online Services’ section select ‘Claim.’
  • On the page displayed enter details such as name, date of birth, father’s name, PAN, Aadhaar number, date of joining the company, and mobile number.
  • Now, click on ‘Proceed for Online Claim.’
  • Next, on a new page displayed select ‘PF Advance (Form 31) from the dropdown menu.
  • Finally, choose the reason for availing advance and enter the amount and your current address.
  • Sign the disclosure and click on Get Aadhaar OTP.’
  • Finally, enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number, click on ‘Validate OTP and Submit Claim Form’.

Check Form 31 Claim Status

Once you have submitted the EPF Advance Form through offline/online mode, you can check Form 31 Claim status by following the steps as mentioned below:

  • Visit the official EPFO portal by clicking on https://unifiedportal-emp.epfindia.gov.in/epfo/.
  • Now, log in to the portal by entering your UAN, Password & captcha code.
  • Next, under the ‘Online Services’, click on ‘Track Claim Status.’
  • Select the location of your PF office from your drop-down menu.
  • On the page displayed, you can view your region and office code. Enter the Establishment code
  • Finally, enter your 7-digit account number and Submit’ your form to see the status of your application.

Points to Remember while Filling EPF Form 31

Below mentioned are essential points that you need to remember while filing EPF Form 31:

  • To get the funds in your bank account don’t forget to attach the cancelled cheque with Form 31.
  • You can choose money order as the payout option only if the amount for withdrawal is below ₹ 2,000.
  • You must submit EPF Form 31 offline with duly attested by the employer.
  • For submitting EPF withdrawal form 31 online, you must link your UAN with a bank account, Aadhaar, PAN Card & mobile.
  • It takes a few weeks for processing of EPF claims and disbursal of funds.

    As per the latest update, EPFO has allowed you to withdraw EPF funds for COVID. In March 2020, the central government introduced a special provision that allowed the EPF members to withdraw basic pay and dearness allowance (DA) of three months or 75 per cent of their EPF money, whichever is lower as advance. However, it was permitted to a one-time advance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with that, EPFO has also reduced the claim settlement cycle to just three days as against the statutory requirement to settle the claims within 20 days.
