What is the MSME Sector?

MSME definition is Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise, which was introduced in agreement with the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006 by the Government of India. MSMEs are critical contributors to the country's socio-economic development. The role of msme in indian economy is important, as the MSMEs are key contributors to the socio-economic development of the country. The initiative of MSME started functioning in 2006 to create a competitive environment and encourage small businesses to ensure speedy development and boost the economy.

The MSMEs are categorized into manufacturing sectors and service sectors.The sectors are classified as per the investment, annual turnover and investment. Below is the reset classification of the micro, small and medium enterprises.

Earlier, the manufacturing sectors and service sectors were allotted different investment limits. The maximum limit of investment was higher for manufacturing sectors than service sectors. However, the previous differences have been removed in the new classification as mentioned above.

Registration Process For MSME

MSME registration can be done online as well as offline. Following is the process of MSME registration


  • Log in to the website of the MSME online application https://msme.gov.in/online-application.
  • Enter the details like Aadhar details, PAN details, social category and gender, MSME number, investment amount etc.
  • Gather the documents required for the registration.
  • Submit the application process.
  • Now, the verification will be done which can take up to 2 working days.
  • Once the application is approved registration will be done.
  • MSME registration certificate will be delivered to your doorstep.


  • Log in to the website of the MSME and download and print out the application form.
  • Fill in the required details like Aadhar details, PAN details, social category and gender, MSME number, investment amount etc.
  • Upload the documents on the website.
  • Submit the application process.
  • Now, the verification will be done which can take up to 2 working days.
  • Once the application is approved registration will be done.
  • MSME registration certificate will be delivered to your doorstep.

Applicants will be asked to pay an MSME registration fee of Rs 1,999. Payment can be made online.

Documents Required for MSME Registration

  • Property papers.
  • Rent agreement.
  • Cancelled cheque.
  • Partnership deed (for partnership firms).
  • Memorandum of Association (for companies).
  • Articles of Association (for companies).
  • PAN Card.
  • General, SC, ST or OBC form (if any).
  • Physical ability form (if any).
  • Business address proof: Self-own property: allotment letter, property tax slip, possession letter.In case of Rented property: rent receipts and NOC from the property owner.
  • Company registration proof: Photocopy of sale bill and photocopy of purchase bill (of raw material).
  • License and purchase bills for machinery: Photocopy of an industrial license and bills of purchasing machinery and installations.

MSME Certificate

MSME certificates act as evidence of MSME registration.MSME certificate download is possible through online and offline registration process. The fees will be charged accordingly. Each enterprise will be allotted an individual MSME certificate based on industry and sector type.

How to Download MSME Certificate

For udyam registration certificate download perform the given steps:-

Step 1 : Open the given link: https://udyamregistration.gov.in/UA/PrintAcknowledgement_Pub.aspx .

Step 2 : Enter your 12 digit UAM number or Udyog Aadhar number.

Step 3 : Enter your mobile number as per your Udyog aadhar card .

Step 4 : Click on ‘Download’ .

Can an individual register for MSME?

No, an individual cannot register for MSME, only enterprises and businesses can. However, a one-person enterprise or company is eligible for the MSME registration. The process and fees of the one-person enterprise will be the same as the regular MSME process and fees.
