What is Atal Innovation Mission?

Atal Innovation Mission is a flagship programme set up by the Government of India in 2016; the programme comes under the sponsorship of Niti Aayog. The programme aims to create a scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and entrepreneurship across the country. This initiative has helped the country to rank better in Global Index Innovation. In 2015, the country stood at 81 positions, and in 2020, India is at 48th position.

What are the 5 Key Areas of Atal Innovation Mission?

Atal Innovation Mission has worked in different areas like:-

  • Atal Tinkering Labs :- Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) aims to foster curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving techniques among young students. It is done through the Internet of Things, 3D printing, rapid prototyping tools, robotics, miniaturized electronics, do-it-yourself kits and many more. Niti aayog Atal Innovation Mission provides financial support of ₹ 20 Lakh to each school.₹ 10 Lakh is for the one-time establishment of the atal lab. The remaining amount is the operational cost for five years.
  • Atal Incubation Centres :- Atal Incubation Centres (AICs) are set up at universities to create an ecosystem for entrepreneurs and startups. Till now, these centres have been opened at 60+ universities and institutions. Under this mission the government grants ₹ 10 Cr to set up Greenfield incubators. These incubators are set up in the agriculture, education, manufacturing, water, energy, health, transport and sanitation sector.
  • Atal New India Challenges :- Atal New India Challenges programme has been launched in partnership with five other ministries and government departments. This project aims to create product and service innovations having a national socio-economic impact. This project aims towards agriculture, mobility, health, education, railways, water and sanitation, food processing, electric mobility, housing, and the power and energy sector. Currently, over 24 Atal New India Challenges have been launched.
  • ARISE ANIC Challenges :- This programme has been launched in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Ministry of Food Processing Industries). The aim is to promote creativity and innovation in the MSME sector and startup sector in a phased manner.
  • Mentor of the Change :- This programme has been launched to make Atal Innovation Mission successful. It is one of the most extensive mentors engagement and management programs. Approximately 5000 mentors have registered for this programme, and mentors must spend 1-2 hours every week in one or more labs. They work with other countries in Asia-pacific, the US, UK, Latin America, Europe and African countries.

What are the Upcoming Areas under AIM?

Atal Community Innovation Centre :- The department is launching another programme called Atal Community Innovation centres (ACIC).The programme- atal community innovation centre- aims to promote the benefits of technology-led innovation in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities (underserved or unserved). The government has a grant of ₹ 2.50 Cr for this project, and till now, 650+ Applications have been received. It aims at 50+ ACIC’s across the country.

  • Alternate fuel-based transportation
  • Cleaning of sewer and septic tanks
  • Climate-smart agriculture
  • Digital and Greywater management
  • Fog vision system for road and rail
  • Garbage composition devices
  • Instant portable water quality testing
  • Mixing blades for composting
  • Predictive maintenance of Rolling Stock
  • Sustaining drinking water sources
  • Systems to identify, predict and recognize rail failure, using technologies
  • Waste in public spaces

Atal New India Challenge Scheme :- It is a scheme that the MSME sector can apply to, open startups Also, R&D Organizations, Innovators and Academicians can apply.

Eligibility Criteria for Atal Innovation Mission

The eligibility criteria for atal community innovation centre, atal lab and other programmes related to Atal Innovation Mission is:-

What is the Source of Funding for Atal Innovation Mission?

Atal Innovation Mission gets its funding from the government of India by Niti Aayog. The government has provided a maximum grant of ₹ 2.50 Cr.

Atal Innovation Mission Achievements

  • As a seed funding, AIM provided ₹ 6 Cr (approximately).
  • It has conducted more than 900 events.
  • It has conducted more than 350 training programmes.
  • Incubation of 600 startups, out of these 100 are women-led startups.
  • 102 incubators have been shortlisted from 23 states and already funded 47 incubators.
  • For the development of the ecosystem, more than 350 collaborations have been done.

What is the National Innovation Initiative?

The National Innovation Initiative is another initiative by AIM to help various industries grow across the country. The AIM is working to promote various industries like:-

  • IDEX :- Innovation for defence excellence
  • Smart Cities Mission (SCM) :- Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • San-sadhan Hackathon :- Ministry of Jalshakti and Department of Empowerment of persons with disabilities

To apply for Atal in the tinkering lab, one must fulfil the eligibility criteria like the schools should have a space to build a lab for at least 1500 sq. feet for plain areas and school in hilly areas and beachy areas an area of 1000 sq. feet is required and much more.
