Why do you need to Link Bank Account and Aadhaar?

As per the recent ruling by Supreme Court, it is no longer mandatory to link your Aadhaar with your bank account. Even though it is not compulsory to link the aadhaar with a bank account, there is no escape as well. It is mainly because various State and Central run benefits are available only after Aadhaar is linked with the bank account. To avail services like LPG subsidy, receiving a pension in your account, linking aadhaar with the bank account is a must.

However, before the ruling of the Supreme Court, linking Aadhaar with bank accounts was made mandatory by the government. Now, aadhaar cannot be linked with a bank unless the account holder provides clear consent for it. In the same view, the National Payments Corporation disabled the override feature because of which banks cannot link Aadhaar without the user's permission.

Linking Bank Account to Aadhaar using Internet Banking

You can link your Aadhaar with your bank account using the internet banking facility. Below are the steps which you can follow for the same:

  • Firstly, visit the official website of the bank in which you have the account.
  • In the next step, login into your net banking account.
  • Now navigate to the option termed as 'Link Aadhaar Card', 'Aadhaar Card Seeding', or 'Update Aadhaar Card Details'
  • After that, enter correct information as required, including your Aadhaar number.
  • After entering the information, verify it and then click on 'Submit'.
  • The bank will verify and validate the information sent by you internally. You will receive a confirmation message when your request is successfully submitted.
  • If there is an error in any of the information provided by you, then a message or notification for the same will be sent on your registered email and mobile number.
  • If there is no error, then your Aadhaar will be successfully linked, and the same will be confirmed by the bank via SMS, or Email, or both.

Linking Bank Account and Aadhaar through the Bank’s Mobile App

In today's time, mobile banking is gaining pace. More and more banking features are now made available on the mobile app of the bank, and the facility of linking Aadhaar with a bank account is one of them. Following are steps to link your aadhaar with a bank account using the bank's mobile app:

  • In case you don't have the mobile app of the bank, then download the same from your app store. If you already have it, then log in to your account in the app.
  • Now, click on 'Requests', or 'Service Requests', or 'Services' or any other variation as available.
  • In the next step, navigate to the option 'Update Aadhar', or 'Link Aadhaar' or any other variation.
  • Enter the required information along with selecting the account which you want to link and entering the correct Aadhaar number.
  • Accept the terms and conditions as applicable and then click on 'Submit' or 'Confirm'.

Link Bank Account with Aadhar By Visiting Branch

In case you do not have the net banking facility active on your account, then you can also link your Aadhaar with your bank account by visiting the branch. Follow these steps for the same:

  • You need to visit the branch of the bank in which your account is allocated.
  • After reaching the branch, ask for the form to link your aadhaar with your bank account.
  • Fill the required details of the form and provide the self-attested photocopy of your Aadhaar
  • Also, make sure to carry the original Aadhaar copy in case it is required for verification.
  • If there are no discrepancies in the information provided by you, then your request will be approved, and the same will be notified to you through a message on your registered mobile number.

Aadhaar Bank Account Linking Through Phone Banking

Banks provide the facility of linking aadhaar to your bank account via phone as well. Follow these steps:

  • Find out if your bank offers the facility of linking aadhaar to the bank account through a phone number or not.
  • If your bank does provide the facility, then you can give a missed call on the provided number.
  • When you get a call back from the bank, enter your 12 digit Aadhaar number when suggested by the IVR.
  • After the call is finished, you will get an SMS from the bank confirming about linking of your aadhaar with your bank account.

How to Link Bank account and Aadhaar at an ATM?

Nowadays, the ATMs of the banks are also housing the facility of linking aadhaar with bank accounts. However, you can use this facility only when you have a debit card issued on your account. Following are the steps to link your aadhaar with bank account through an ATM:

  • Swipe your debit card in the ATM.
  • Now, enter the 4 digit PIN or choose' Services' from the displayed options, based on what is asked first. Some ATMs ask for a PIN at first step while some ask for it last.
  • After you have chosen 'Services', now select 'Aadhaar Registration' or 'Aadhaar Linking' as per the displayed option.
  • As the next step, choose the type of your account.
  • Now, enter your 12 digit aadhaar number and click on 'Submit'.

You will get a confirmation message of successful linking of aadhaar with your bank account on the registered mobile number after the bank has verified your aadhaar information.

Linking Bank Account to Aadhaar through SMS

Some banks offer the facility of linking aadhaar by sending an SMS as well in a specified format on a specific number. Follow these steps to link your aadhaar with your bank account through SMS:

  • Firstly enquire whether your bank offers the facility of linking aadhaar with bank account through SMS or not.
  • If your bank does provide the facility, then you need to send an SMS in a specified format including your aadhaar number to the bank's number.
  • You will receive an acknowledgement SMS from the bank after your sent SMS is received by your bank.
  • You will get the confirmation of your aadhaar being linked to your bank account after your aadhaar details are verified by the bank.

How to Check Aadhaar Linking Status With Bank Account?

After you have performed the steps of linking your aadhaar to your bank account through any of the methods as mentioned above, you can also check the status of your aadhaar linking with your bank account. Follow the below-mentioned steps to check the status of your aadhaar and bank account linking:

  • Start by visiting the aadhaar website; www.uidai.gov.in.
  • Now, under the 'My Aadhaar' tab, click on 'Check Aadhaar and Bank Account Linking Status' option which is listed within the head of 'Aadhaar Services'.
  • On the next page, enter the 12 digit Aadhaar number or the 16 digits virtual ID.
  • Follow it up by entering the 'Security Code' and then click on 'Send OTP'.
  • Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number and click on 'Login'. The OTP is valid for 10 minutes only.
  • As you log in, the website will display the screen stating whether your aadhaar is linked with your bank account or not.

In case you have multiple bank accounts, then you have to check the status with your bank as through this link you can only know the status of the last bank account to be linked with your aadhaar.

  • Government sets deadline to link bank accounts with PAN and Aadhaar.
    In the latest announcement by Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman asked all the banks to ensure that the bank accounts are linked with PAN & Aadhaar card by March 31, 2021, and also linked with PAN wherever relevant. She said, “Ideally by December, if not by March 31, 2021, every account should have a PAN where needed and applicable and Aadhaar in every case.” Further, she emphasised that the banks should promote the digital modes of payments & adopt the UPI payments techniques in the future.

  • 2021-07-02 : Change in DoB, Mobile No, Address on Aadhaar on your own
    UIDAI has introduced a new update to its official portal. This new update allows those who have moved to a new residential address to change the said address on their current Aadhaar identification by themselves. Through the self-service portal on the Aadhaar website, users can update these details among others.
  • 2021-07-02 : Only PAN card and Aadhaar required for MSME registration
    The government has simplified the registration process for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and they will now only need to furnish PAN and Aadhaar to register. Union Minister for MSMEs informed that after getting registered, the MSME units will be getting priority and finance. He also underlined the need for imparting training to small units in the field of entrepreneurship and assured full support to the sector.
  • 2021-06-16 : PF return allowed only with Aadhar seeded UANs
    As per the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) instructions, PF returns shall be allowed to be filed only for those whose Aadhar cards are verified with the UAN. The date for filing ECR (electronic challan cum receipt or PF return) with Aadhaar verified UANs has been extended to September 1, 2021.
  • 2021-06-11 : Linking Aadhaar and PAN mandatory before June 30
    The deadline to link Aadhar card with PAN card has been extended from March 31 to June 30. Failing to link Aadhar-PAN until the deadline will lead to a penalty of Rs 1,000 and PAN becoming inoperative.
  • 2021-06-09 : Aadhar not mandatory for any covid-related service
    UIDAI clarified that for any covid-related service, having an Aadhar card is not mandatory. If in case anyone is denied service just because of not having an Aadhar card, the issue must be raised to the concerned authorities.
